Ask a new learner whether to study "Brazilian" or "European" Portuguese and you'd think they were two different languages. They're not — a Brazilian and a Portuguese speaker understand each other easily — but the two varieties have drifted apart enough in sound, rhythm and vocabulary that the choice genuinely matters for how you'll speak.
Sound and rhythm
European Portuguese tends to swallow unstressed vowels, giving it a compressed, almost consonant-heavy rhythm that many learners initially find harder to parse by ear. Brazilian Portuguese keeps vowels fuller and more open, and stretches syllables in a way that's closer to how it's written — one reason Brazilian Portuguese is often recommended for absolute beginners.
Everyday vocabulary
Plenty of common words simply differ: a bus is ônibus in Brazil and autocarro in Portugal; a mobile phone is celular versus telemóvel; a train is trem versus comboio. None of this blocks understanding — context fills the gaps quickly — but it does mean the phrasebook you pick up in São Paulo won't always match the one from Lisbon.
Grammar, gently
Brazilian Portuguese is more relaxed about where pronouns sit in a sentence and leans on você for "you" in most situations. European Portuguese preserves more formal pronoun placement and distinguishes tu and você more carefully by context and formality — a distinction that matters more in Portugal than in most of Brazil.
Which should you learn?
It comes down to where you'll actually use it. Heading to Brazil for work or travel, or supporting a Brazilian process from India? Brazilian Portuguese is the natural choice, and it's what most of our trainers teach as native speakers. Working with Portugal, Angola or Mozambique, or planning further study in Lisbon or Porto? European Portuguese will serve you better. Either way, the grammar you build in one variety transfers almost entirely to the other — switching later is far easier than starting from zero.
Our Basic through Expert level courses are taught with this in mind — tell us your goal when you enquire, and we'll match you with the right variety and trainer.
